for president obama. governor romney has got a lock in florida. that has not happened 100%. i think governor romney has more to look for the reagan romney again has to win virginia. it is possible to win the presidency if you do not win virginia, but it gets tough. those are states where there has been an assumption that governor romney will go with those states. he does not have them locked in just yet, and you start to talk about ohio, wisconsin, new hampshire, and nevada, they are very favorable for the president right now. it is tough for governor romney. he has got to have a global win. it cannot just be trying to figure out some mix of states to try to get to 270. there is a final push for the country decides they are ready to hire him and fire president obama. tavis: we talked earlier about this notion of being careful, how you walk this tightrope when you have a storm that is vexing so much of the country, but there are some issues in this storm the obama campaign could raise. i suspect they are smart not to raise it. when a candidate says, let's get rid of fema and send the money ba

. >>> president obama and governor romney were largely in agreement on a range of foreign policy concerns. particularly those centering on the middle east. the ouster of former president mubarak of egypt, the 2014 exit date for afghanistan, the killing of terrorists with nutes romney and obama echoed each other. >> question. is bipartisanship now back in style at least when it comes to foreign policy in a presidential debate? pat buchanan? >> no it isn't but they are moving toward consensus where the american people are at. they are both pro israel, going to stand beside them. both very hawkish toward iran, although they don't want war in the middle east again. they don't want boots on the ground. they both say we have to do nation building here at home because that is the consensus where the american people are at john. but i wouldn't call it bipartisanship. romney lost this debate on points but he won it because he contradicted the image barack obama has sought to portray of him, reckless, bombing people, putting troops in syria. that is why you are seeing the steady momentum of romney

, colorado and ohio. yesterday, obama toured the aftermath of hurricane sandy in new jersey along with governor chris christie who had nothing but kind words for the president. >> has worked incredibly closely with me. i cannot thank the president enough for his personal concern and compassion for our state and for the people of our state. >> the governor has said he has no intention of bringing romney to new jersey to survey the storm's damage. christie aides are denying any sort of rift with the romney campaign saying it is just about dealing with the storm and not about presidential politics. but one of the main political speculations here is that christie thinks romney has no chance of winning and he is setting himself up for a run in 2016. >>> romney has a good cause to be worried if the polls have anything to say about it. president obama is ahead six points in iowa. that's coming from the nbc news "wall street journal" morris poll. the president's also up by three in wisconsin and two in new hampshire. two

commuter car entering the city must have at least three people in it. president obama and governor romney's renewed campaign come as the latest polls show president obama lead big six points in eye but locked in a tight balle with romney in new hampshire and wisconsin. nearly all interviews conducted before hurricane sandy, which just might end up being the defining moment of this election. joining me today to discuss all of this and more, msnbc political analyst and national affairs editor for "new york" magazine, john heilemann. msnbc political analyst and executive editor of msnbc.com, richard wolffe. msnbc political analyst, jonathan alter of bloomberg view, and msnbc political analyst and former dnc, karen finney, hopefully joining us shortly. john, i go to you first. in terms of sandy being an inflection point, game changer, if you will, a term we do not toss around lightly, are we -- is it -- is it a game changer? can you prognosticate that far? do you think the president is stronger coming out of the sandy response as a candidate? >> look, there's no question that if you think abo

president obama and governor romney are harvard law graduates and good family men, when it comes to running a business and getting people back to work, which at least 23 million people are concerned about, governor romney is the man for the job and the des moines register is endorsing governor romney. >> huge in iowa, potentially. obviously completely stuck in the polls, the president seems to have had more people coming out in early voting but the statewide polling in iowa shows romney gaining. six electoral votes, it could come down to a margin of victory in the single digits. this one matters. it's also the case that the des moines register has gotten this endorsement correct in five of the -- all five of the last races. they endorsed al gore in 2000 and he got most of the popular vote. 80s pretty good bellwether. >> we're going to take a look at that in the next hour. the popular vote verses electoral vote. >> who in the office would be able to stimulate businesses, have a plan that gets small businesses back on their feet and therefore you have hiring. do you see that as the most impor

to likely voters. president obama 44%. governor romney, 51%. why after all this time does governor romney beat president obama when it comes to the question of who could best handle the economy? >> well, first of all, candy, there's a plethora of polls out there. >> a lot of them sort of show this, david. >> i actually prefer the cnn polls. i like the one you put out on friday where we were ahead in ohio and in states like ohio and elsewhere people know the reality, which is the president took tough steps to save our economy from freefall to save the auto industry, which governor romney would not have done, and he has a vision of how to move this economy forward. that will rebuild the middle class. that will -- and governor romney who runs around this country now saying i represent change doesn't represent change. he what he represents is a return to a failed task. >> still more feel think the governor would do better with the economy than the president. >> in that particular poll -- in that particular poll, candy, that may be the case, but in reality that's not the case. if you look at w

well, would say -- to say that michelle obama's not heaping praise on governor romney's time, his leadership in massachusetts, isn't that apples and oranges? those aren't the same thing. >> it actually is showing, though, the impact of all the praise that chris christie is heaping upon barack obama and him getting a political benefit from that. >> okay. >> more than just -- actually, probably the better comparison, tamron, is 9/11 after the 9/11 terrorist attacks where democrats and republicans rallied together around george w. bush who had been in the presidency just less than a year after winning a very hotly contested and contentious election. and the country coming together. and we're seeing that to a lesser extent right now play out on the east coast of new jersey and new york. >> thank you so much. i greatly appreciate -- go ahead, i'm sorry, keith, we're almost out of time, i'm sorry. >> i think it also shows the collapse of mitt romney's support mechanism in some ways. not that chris christie's abandoning him, but you also have bob mcdonnell of virginia who praised obama,

governor romney's rationale in this race one line of the obama argument, i am the guy you know. >> after four years as president, you know me. you may not agree with every decision i've made, you may be frustrated sometimes at the pace of change, but you know that i say what i mean and i mean what i say. you know what i believe. you know where i stand. you know i tell the truth. and you know i fight for working families every single day as hard as i know how. >> we know what this president believes. but governor romney -- >> with these guys, it all depends on who you're talking to, where you are, what time of day it is, what state you're in, what the polls say. how the weather is. it always, always depends, everything depends. i never met more two guys who everything depends more on. i don't know what they are for, ladies and gentlemen. >> mr. romney made changes, too, depending on the weather, but not this president. this week president obama has shown why he is above the man who wants his job and he's made mr. romney seem downright laughable on the issue. >> he promised to be a post pa

's trip. on the ground, president obama and governor christie visited relief shelters throughout the area. the governor offered this assessment of the president to storm victims. he means what he says. it's important that he is here. christie had more praise later on. >> we spent a significant afternoon together, surveying the damage up and down the new jersey coastline. we were on marine one together, to be able to show the president that personally, had an opportunity to see it and discuss it at length, and going over to the shelter here, being able to meet with folks and see the president and his concern, the concern all of us have for making sure that things get back to normal as quickly as possible. i discussed all those issues today with the president, and i'm pleased to report that he has sprung into action immediately, to help get us those things, while we were in the car riding together. so i want to thank him for that. he has worked incredibly closely with me, since before the storm hit. i think this is our sixth conversation since the weekend, and it's been a great working rela

obama and governor romney are in the buckeye state as if the whole race may depend on it. guess what? it probably does. we'll go live to the site of the president's event this morning near columbus. there are more than just two guys running for office. house republicans could actually pick up a few seats on tuesday. we'll talk to the gop's man in charge of holding on to the house and the guy who predicted this could happen more than two years ago. november 2, 2012. this is the daily rundown. i'm chuck todd. let's get to my first read of the morning. four days after one of the worst storms ever to hit the country residents are reeling from sandy's impact. according to an early estimate from ploody's analytic the damage will approach $50 billion including property damage and loss of economic aft ty. more than 3.5 home owners and businesses are facing a day without power. the good news the number keeps coming down but there are still millions without power and then new york, staten island where at least 90 people were killed. the situation is particularly grim and residents are still co

front property, a restaurant obliterated and what president obama and governor christie are seeing as they fly up and down the shoreline. we saw marine one go by in a convoy with helicopters about ten minutes ago and making their rounds. but i don't think a lot of people expect a lot from the federal government in the short term. >> yeah. >> right now people are just trying to deal with their immediate needs, moving in with neighbors, staying with friends. we have heard reports that some utility companies are talking about perhaps turning off water services, for example, because there could be contamination in the system. people are hunkering down and the work is just beginning. in this town, for example, the roads are covered with -- some places, several feet of sand. they're impassablimpassable. impossible to get in and out of some communities up and down the shoreline and in new jersey. again, to think of at this point of a lot of relief supplies arriving, people are hunkering down trying to deal with the near term right now. >> let me correct myself. it's congressman steve isra

later in the day. the governor and president obama took a helicopter ride over the area from atlantic city down to an area where the governor had told people to get off and in many cases they didn't and he kind of jokingly but firmly let them know when they were speaking a couple minutes after the video you're seeing right now, he let them know he was not happy with them but he'd give them a break this time around. but it's just a very, very kind of like -- this is a -- you know it's not a big state geographically but it's a very densely populated state and very diverse when it comes to geography as well. the highlands took a tremendous hit because that's where the winds seemed to be the strongest and trees came down and power is out there and there's no telling when it will be restored. along the shore, of course, you're seeing some of the damage that occurred there where once stood houses there are now waves in some cases. then you go up farther north closer to new york city across the hudson and you have places like jersey city and hoboken, places that are populated with an awful l

. >> obama: governor romney talks about small businesses but governor, when you were in massachusetts, small businesses development ranked about 48th i think out of 46 in massachusetts because the policies you're promoting don't help small businesses. >> cenk: i don't know if he did it on purpose but i loved that. he accidentally said he ranked 48th and then all of the fact checkers said no, actually he was third from the bottom not second. how about bain? you didn't create jobs. that wasn't your job. as we showed you in the commercial, he thought his job was to harvest profits out of the companies and if he left them to die well so be it. in fact, he did leave a lot of them to die. this guy has no credentials on job creation. and his proposals are identical to bush's and maybe even worse because they even further right wing. that's the reality. that's what i think president obama should have focused on this entire time. he did a pretty decent job with this campaign but i would have hit hard on those categories bu

much better than president obama. even the most liberal people say governor romney well outshined the president. that really helped with the early voting. the ground game in the key states is pivotal. but mitt romney's moving in the right direction. they can't afford four more years of barack obama. >> shannon: something the president has had to talk a lot about and fielded a lot of questions about, of course, the deadly attack in benghazi. four americans left dead and a lot of unanswered questions at this point. the house has held one initial hearing on this. there are a number of investigations underway. what is your impression so far about what have you learned and not been able to learn? >> what's unfortunate, the white house has not been transparent. they promised it, but they have not been candid. yesterday, a local aquilliate in colorado asked the president, did they deny a request for help and the president couldn't answer that basic question. a lot more questions we have four dead americans and people injured. and it's just sad, we have to make sure that it never, never h

immediately to get those things. >> obama: governor christie throughout this process has been responsive. he has been aggressive in making sure that the state got out in front of this incredible storm, and i think the people of new jersey recognize that he has put his heart and soul into making sure the people in new jersey bounce back even stronger than before. so i just want to thank him for his extrordanaire leadership and partnership. >> ahhhhh! >> i can't imagine what is going on in the romney camp. >> stephanie: no. and they don't know how to respond. kevin madden or whatever his name is -- even they realize that they are in the middle of a national disaster. chris christie. >> i discussed all of those issues today with the president, and i'm pleased to report he has sprung into action immediately while we were riding in the car together. so i want to thank him for that. i think is our sixth conversation since the weekend. >> ahhhhh! cooperation! ah! >> that's another c word they hate cooperation. >> stephanie: yeah he has been up against this solid wall of obstruction

president obama 49% to 47%. now, that is westboun within thn of error. former mississippi governor haley bar bore join barber join. good evening. > >> greta: have you had any further thoughts about the race? >> for my thinking, the biggest change in the race is to obama's favor and that's been this storm, you know. any day that we're not talking about the economy and jobs, that we're not talking about obama's record for debt and deficits, health care, energy, any day we're talking about something else, that's good for obama, and so i will be surprised if he doesn't make a little bit of a comeback here. he's had a prett pretty solid mt for a month. there wasn't anything happehe m. what may stop it is this storm and not so much that the president will do a great job, although i don't have any doubt that he will. mostly what happens right after a terrible storm is we know where i come from, it's the local first responders. it's the firemen, the policeman, the highway patrolmen, the national guardsmen, the mayors, the governors, but the federal government has a role to play, a bigger role down t
